Are you living in alignment with your values? Do you even know what your values really are? It can be all too easy to take on the more popular values of our family, friends, society or the media, without knowing what our authentic values are. For example, after extensive work on my own values, I've found that quality, luxury and comfort are values of mine. I like nice things! It's more on trend to prefer experiences over 'things' but we're all different - it's what makes the world go round. Don't be afraid to value something that others don't. It doesn't have to be popular to be a personal value.
So why should we live in alignment with our values? Firstly, it provides and enhances our levels of motivation for action, helping us to kick goals and get closer to where we want to be. Secondly, it helps undermine the work of our inner saboteur. Action based on values is more powerful than our inner saboteur's reasons for not taking action or taking the path of least resistance. Thirdly, it allows us to lead more fulfilling, authentic lives, and what could be better than that?
Now we now why it's important to align with our values, it's time to do a little digging. Take some time out to think about some moments in your life that were especially rewarding, rich, poignant or fulfilling. Can you think of any values that were being honoured in those moments?
Next, think of some times when you have been angry, frustrated or upset. Moments of distress are likely to signal that a value is being suppressed. Can you flip it around to find the suppressed value?
Finally, think of the occasions when you take certain values to the extreme. For me, it's tidiness. People may tease you about it, or tell you it drives them crazy. This could signal a blown up value - can you see any in yourself?
